Portfolio Assessment
For our final assessment of this unit, we are using a portfolio of all student work performed in this unit. Below is the rubric for the final portfolio. Throughout the unit there will be 15 artifacts that must be included in the portfolio - 10 in class or homework assignments and 5 combined activity components. The emphasis of this unit is on the combined activity. This portion is worth 35% of the total unit grade and should be emphasized to the students. We feel that every facet of the unit contributes to the final interviewing and writing assignment and builds students' ability and knowledge on slavery. Through the final writing assignment, they should be able to use other artifacts to create a more descriptive narrative of their own. The purpose of portfolio is to demonstrate not only the work of the unit, but to chart the progression and understanding of the students about American slaves.
Each assignment will be graded individually based on its own rubric. The total points for each assignment are listed on the portfolio rubric. The assignments will be graded one time and the actual score for each student should be placed in the appropriate section. The total number of points for the portfolio will be tallied, and the resulting score will be the unit score for the student (there should be only one score in the grade book for this unit, each assignment should not be counted twice).
